Belarus smuggles migrants into Lithuania

Minsk ruler Lukashenko sees migrants as a vehicle for hybrid warfare against the EU. Lithuanian border guards film Belarusians damaging a border fence and pushing refugees into the neighboring country.
According to the Lithuanian Border Guard, Belarusian security forces helped a group of migrants illegally cross the border into neighboring EU-Lithuania. To that end, several armed agents are said to have escorted people to the border fence newly built by Lithuania in the late summer of 2021 and damaged the barrier, the border guard announced on Facebook.
A video released by authorities in Vilnius aims to document the incident. The pictures were taken on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border. There, Belarusian officials cut the barbed wire and broke a gate in the fence allowing the migrants to enter Lithuanian territory. Immediately afterwards, they were rounded up by Lithuanian border guards, while Belarusian security forces hid in bushes near the fence, as can be seen in the video. The Belarusian officials were later said to have left in a minibus.
EU gives Lukashenko . debt
Lithuania has launched an investigation into illegal crossing of the state border. In September, the Foreign Ministry in Vilnius had sent a note to the leadership of the authoritarian neighboring country over “repeated cases of deliberate damage” to the fence, which was completed at the end of August.
Lithuania shares a border of almost 680 kilometers with Belarus, which is part of the EU’s external border. In late summer and autumn 2021, thousands of people tried to enter the EU illegally. The European Union accuses Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko of bringing migrants from crisis areas to the EU’s external border in an organized manner, calling it hybrid warfare. Lithuania responded with increased border protection and built a border fence nearly 550 kilometers long, four meters high and reinforced with spiral barbed wire. Other countries with a direct border with Belarus have also greatly strengthened their border installations.
