After Mick Schumacher’s first points successes at Silverstone and Spielberg, it looked like the 23-year-old had secured a future in Formula 1. But in the ten races that followed he could no longer place himself in single digits.
At the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, it was only enough for 13th place. He also finished last in qualifying, while teammate Kevin Magnussen secured pole position in the same car.
As “Bild” reports, Schumacher’s time as a starter at Team Haas is over. According to this, Haas boss Günther Steiner has now finally decided on Nico Hülkenberg as the second driver alongside Kevin Magnussen for the new season. “We just need to clarify details,” the 57-year-old teased over the weekend without revealing his name.

Schumacher has only a small chance of a regular cockpit in 2023
Since all other cockpits for 2023 are already taken, Mick Schumacher has only a mini hope of a regular cockpit: 21-year-old Logan Sargeant, with whom the British racing team Williams wants to start the coming racing year, does not yet have a super license.
To achieve that, the American must confirm his third place overall in the last race of the FIA Formula 2 season. If he fails, Williams will have to reoccupy the second cockpit. Mick Schumacher would also be an option.
Otherwise, the German will not start in Formula 1 next year. Schumacher cannot imagine a switch to another racing series – as suggested by the old F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone. “I will not forget Formula 1. I love it too much,” he recently said.
Alleged “Plan B”: replacement driver at Mercedes, then to “Audi” 2024
The last option left to him is to lie in wait as a reserve driver for his next chance in Formula 1. RTL expert Felix Görner is sure: “He will probably become a test driver for the Mercedes teams“, writes Görner in his column on “sport.de”.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff sees himself as a partner of the Schumachers and wants to see Mick in Formula 1 in the future. “If the opportunity arises [Schumacher als Ersatzpilot zu verpflichten]Mercedes would be open,” Wolff already said.

However, Mercedes has two top drivers on the grid with ex-world champion Lewis Hamilton and young hope George Russell, who just celebrated his first F1 win in Brazil. Beating these two heavyweights will be a huge task for Schumacher.
At the same time, Schumacher would “keep warm” by acting as a replacement driver for the next round of negotiations when the cockpits for 2024 are awarded. “If Audi joins Sauber (Alfa Romeo) in 2024, there may be a comeback for Schumacher,” says Felix Görner. “That should be plan B.“
