Timing may also have played a role in Sony’s decision not to participate in Gamescom 2022 in Cologne, which officially kicks off on Tuesday evening.

Updated July 26, 2022: After a long communication break, Sony Interactive has released an update on PlayStation VR2.

  • Among other things, there should be one “passage view” – in other words: you can also keep an eye on the surroundings with the VR headset on. With a function key you switch between virtual and ‘real’ reality without having to take off the VR glasses.
  • A new “transfer function” films the player during gameplay, which requires a connected PS5 HD camera. This allows movements and reactions to be recorded and, if desired, shared via social media.
  • Because VR systems usually need some space in the living room, the playing field adjusted via the PS VR2 Sense controller and the built-in cameras. This allows you to ‘leave out’ a sofa or tables, for example. These settings are saved, so there is no need to calibrate every time you start the game.
  • For the VR mode Sony Interactive predicts a 360-degree view at a resolution of 4000 x 2040 (2000 x 2040 per eye) at a frame rate of 90 Hz/120 Hz. Cinema mode the PS5 console and user interface are displayed on a virtual ‘cinema screen’ (HDR / 1,920 x 1,080).

News about the release date and other PS VR2 games will follow soon. Sadly, PS VR2 can’t be tried out at Gamescom 2022 (August 24-28): Sony Interactive canceled early and won’t be there in Cologne.

February 22, 2022 update: Sony Interactive has already revealed what the PlayStation VR2 controllers could look like – now the manufacturer is showing the final design of the input devices and accompanying headset.

The shape of the VR goggles is based on the spherical appearance of the PS VR2 Sense controller and symbolizes the player’s 360-degree view in virtual worlds. Seen from the side, the glasses seem to ‘float’ on the headband.

With ergonomics in mind, Sony Interactive claims to have as light a weight as possible and an easily adjustable headband. The distance between the eye and the field of view can be adjusted; a ventilation system keeps your head cool and prevents the lenses from fogging up.

Sony Interactive speaks of a “gigantic step forward” in the field of virtual reality games. The device must be particularly easy and quick to start up.

Game studios are already working with PS VR2 development kits from Sony. The company hasn’t yet announced a specific date or suggested retail price, but there are plenty of indications that the pack will launch before Christmas. Sony Interactive promises itself and its customers a “more interactive gaming experience” – citing as examples the thrust of a vehicle when starting or pulling objects flying past the character.

On the one hand, the production quantities that can be achieved by then are decisive, on the other hand, there must be enough games at the start. In total, according to Sony, 17 games are in preparation in the group’s own PlayStation Studios alone.
