British-American actress Lansbury died five days before her 97th birthday at her Los Angeles home. She was best known for the TV series “Murder is her hobby”.
Actress Angela Lansbury has passed away. Her mother died peacefully in her sleep at her Los Angeles home, the actress’s three children wrote in a statement. Lansbury would have turned 97 on Sunday.
The Brit is best known for her role as crime-solving crime writer Jessica Fletcher in the series Murder Is Her Hobby. But the actress was also successful with roles in musicals such as “Mame” and “Gypsy”. She has won five Tony Awards for her roles on Broadway and a lifetime achievement award.
She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1945 and 1946 for her roles in The House of Lady Alquist and The Picture of Dorian Gray. She was also nominated in 1962 for the political thriller Ambassador of Fear.
Her role in Murder is Her Hobby and other television appearances earned her 18 Emmy nominations, but she never won. She also holds the record for the most Golden Globe nominations and wins for Best Actress in a Drama Television Series.
At the 63rd Annual Tony Awards in New York, Angela Lansbury accepts her Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for her role in ‘Blithe Spirit’.
Role model for older women
Lansbury said she is happy that her character, Jessica Fletcher, was a role model for other older women. In the first season of “Murder Is Her Hobby” in 1984, she still wore rather old-fashioned clothes, but after that she started to dress more and more chic, because the actress suited the role.
In 2008, she told AP news agency that she was still open to good scripts but didn’t want to play old, ramshackle women: “I want women my age to be portrayed as they are — as vital, productive members of society.”
