sScotland is currently having a debate that is already underway in Germany: a bill from Nicola Sturgeon’s government foresees that people will be able to change their gender in the future with a self-declaration and without a medical report. There are legal concerns about conscription and resistance from women’s rights activists – including Harry Potter author Joanne K. Rowling.

“No to self-identification,” the author wrote on Twitter on Thursday. Rowling posted a photo of herself with her statement expressing her solidarity with those protesting the change outside the Scottish Parliament.

Rowling has made many statements in the past in debates about identity politics and transgender rights. For example, she criticized the use of the phrase “people who menstruate” for biological women.
