Graphics on PS4 are compared to The Last of Us

“The Callisto Protocol” should also look impressive on the PS4. In an interview, Mark James, technical director of Striking Distance Studios, explained the background and made a comparison to “The Last of Us”.

While many gamers have probably arrived in the new generation of consoles by now, “The Callisto Protocol” will also be released for the last generation systems PS4 and Xbox One.

On the older platforms, buyers of the game have to accept some compromises. Nevertheless, the Striking Distance Studios believe that the last-gen version of “The Callisto Protocol” does not have to hide and also cuts a very good figure compared to blockbusters like “The Last of Us”.

“You see a drop in quality. But yeah, we compared it to some of the hit titles of the last generation like The Last of Us and so on. We are above average in these areas as well. Because if you start from a really good recording source, you can always go down in rendering.” according to Mark JamesTechnical Director at Striking Distance Studios.

It’s not entirely clear which “The Last of Us” is being referred to, although the interviewer assumes based on context that James is referring to the PS4 version of “The Last of Us Part 2” and not the PS4 remaster of the PS3 -debut game related.

Some of the best looking characters

However, the “really good source of recording” was elaborated further: “We have some of the best looking characters in the business and I’m sticking with the way we do it. It starts with recording the actors in a way that makes it really easy.” to display the physical information about the light interaction in the game.”

In the earlier development phase, a 360-degree shot of Josh Duhamel, who embodies the main character, was first taken using OLAT technology (stands for One Light at a Time). This recording was then reproduced using the display until there were no more differences from the original. And with this basic data, the last-gen versions could also be optimized.

According to James, “before you even think about how you want to portray the actors in the game, you should invest in the shooting technologies”.

Regardless, players on the last generation of consoles will forgo certain features. The DualSense features, which are only used on the PS5, can be mentioned in this regard. And also within the game, an innovation of the current generation will stand out for its absence: “No ray tracing for the last generation – back to the old techniques,” continues James.
