One of the biggest transfer flops of recent years is back! In the Gladbach jersey, Timothée Kolodziejczak (31) did not show that he is a Bundesliga-sized defender. Now the Frenchman, who is now out of a contract, is auditioning for a relegation candidate.

Two games and a total of 98 minutes were enough in 2017 for Dieter Hecking (58) and his coaching team. Enough to realize that Timothée Kolodziejczak does not have a successful future at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

When Hecking took office at the end of 2016/17, he got a central defender from then-manager Max Eberl (49) for the notorious fee of more than seven million euros, whose name came across one or the other: Timothée Kolodziejczak of FC Sevilla.

The tongue twister Kolodziejczak soon became “Kolo”, also on the defender’s jersey. He only wore it twice in league games for Borussia – both times against Schalke 04.

With the development of Tuesday (October 11), one can confidently add “of all figures” to these statistics. Because Kolodziejczak, who failed to get a foothold in Gladbach and moved to the UANL Tigres in Mexico after only six months on the Lower Rhine, could now become Schalke’s savior.

Like the S04 on Tuesday afternoon on “Twitter“, Kolodziejczak will audition for Schalke “until further notice.” After the 31-year-old’s contract with AS Saint-Étienne in France expired in the summer, he is without a club.

This opens a door for Schalke: if he convinces as a guest player, the financially stricken “Royal Blues” can immediately get him for free. Non-contract players can also be signed outside the transfer window.

It was not necessarily expected that Kolodziejczak would reopen in Germany after stations in France and Mexico. Schalke’s defensive problems make it possible! The coming days and weeks will show whether there will also be a Bundesliga comeback for “Kolo” – this time not against Schalke, but for the traditional club.

In the pre-season, Ko Itakura (25) provided defensive stability to Schalke. In the summer of 2022, however, the Japan international moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Itakura is currently absent due to a partial rupture of the inner ligament in his left knee and will most likely not be available for Gladbach until the World Cup break.

Schalke centre-backs Sepp van den Berg (20/loan from Liverpool) and Marcin Kaminski (30) also have similar injury issues. Currently there are only two fit central defenders and 21 goals in nine games – now those responsible for Schalke are looking to see if Timothée Kolodziejczak is a good lifesaver.
