Gasly to Alpine, De Vries to AlphaTauri

(Motorsport-Total.com) – What has been suggested in recent weeks has now been confirmed: Pierre Gasly will leave the Red Bull cosmos in 2023 and join Alpine for the upcoming season. As expected, AlphaTauri has signed Nyck de Vries as a replacement, so that the Formula 1 puzzle 2023 is slowly being put together.

Alpine practically becomes the French national team, as they get a second French driver on board in addition to Esteban Ocon. Renault CEO Luca de Meo, who will be present at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka this weekend, emphasizes: “We are proud to announce an all-French driver pairing from 2023.”

“Our roots are in France and Alpine was born in Normandy,” he explains, saying that Alpine should become “a symbol of pride for France”. Gasly himself emphasizes that he is happy to be part of the “Alpine family” and to start “this new chapter in my Formula 1 career”.

“Driving for a team with French roots is something very special,” said Gasly, who was the team’s dream solution after Fernando Alonso parted ways with Aston Martin and after losing the tug-of-war with McLaren over Oscar Piastri.

Gasly: Nine years of Red Bull driver is over

“I know Alpine’s strengths racing against them in recent years,” said Gasly, who described the team’s “progress” and “ambition” from Enstone as “very impressive”. At the same time, Gasly emphasizes how grateful he is to Red Bull and refers to “our nine-year journey together”.

“Thanks to their trust and support, I became a Formula 1 driver,” he explains. The Bulls had signed him in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2014 and took him through the GP2 series to Formula 1, where he became champion in 2016. After a start-up period at Toro Rosso, he was allowed to drive alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull in 2019, but was relegated already after half a season.

Since then, the Frenchman has established himself as a strong midfielder, even winning his first Grand Prix at Monza in 2020. Starting next year, a new era will dawn for him. “I want to give the maximum,” he promises, explaining that he wants to compete with Alpine for podium finishes and, in the long term, “contribute to Alpine’s battle for titles in the future.”

Team boss Otmar Szafnauer emphasizes that Gasly has already proven his talent in Formula 1 and together with Ocon the new driver pairing reflects “the high ambitions of the team”. He also thanks Red Bull for releasing Gasly from his contract. Because the Frenchman’s move to Enstone had been in the pipeline for a long time.

AlphaTauri grabs Nyck de Vries

The one-time Grand Prix winner had previously been confirmed to pilot for AlphaTauri for 2023, where he would begin his final year as a Red Bull driver before his contract expired. However, Red Bull didn’t want to get in his way for a change if they found a suitable replacement for the junior team alongside Yuki Tsunoda.

They soon excluded a junior from their own company and came up with the solution Colton Herta, but because the IndyCar driver does not have the necessary super license points and does not get an exception, they had to look elsewhere.

The new solution is called Nyck de Vries, who replaced the sick Alexander Albon in Monza and was able to prove his skills with a ninth place. The former Formula 2 and Formula E champion was then on the list with several teams and will now replace Gasly at AlphaTauri.

The slightly different road to Formula 1

“I am incredibly excited to be driving for AlphaTauri in 2023,” said de Vries. “I want to thank Red Bull and the team for giving me a Formula 1 opportunity.”

After Formula 2, he took a “slightly different path in motorsport”, “but Formula 1 has always been my dream. I am grateful that I can make this dream come true,” said the Dutchman.

He describes his various test assignments in the 2022 season and his replacement in Monza at Williams as “a good starting point for 2023” and says: “Hopefully that has prepared me for what is to come.”

Team boss Tost confident: ‘Strong drivers’

AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost is just as confident: De Vries is a “very talented driver” who has won in every category in which he has competed. “His last big success was winning the Formula E World Championship. And that shows what a good driver he is. Nyck deserves a place in Formula 1.”

“With Yuki and Nyck we have two very strong drivers in our ranks in 2023,” says Tost. He adds: “We had a successful time with Pierre. We will never forget his fantastic victory in Monza, as well as his podium finishes in Brazil and in Azerbaijan. I want to thank him for his efforts and wish him all the best.”

This means there are only two cockpits left for the 2023 Formula 1 season: one at Haas and one at Williams.
