Nico Hulkenberg is about to make his comeback as a regular Formula 1 driver
Hulkenberg had been a problem at Haas since September 2022 for the 2023 Formula 1 season after Schumacher failed to sufficiently convince team management of his abilities in his second year.
With Antonio Giovinazzi, there had been another candidate for the second Haas cockpit for 2023 for some time: Ferrari would have campaigned for Giovinazzi, just as it had campaigned for Schumacher for the 2021 season.
How Giovinazzi Kicked Himself Out
Haas team principal Günther Steiner has repeatedly emphasized that Ferrari no longer has a contractually guaranteed say in cockpit occupancy. However, there still seems to be some leeway between the parties involved, especially since Haas still purchases technical parts such as the drivetrain from Ferrari and there is close cooperation.
And Giovinazzi initially convinced on a Friday assignment for Haas in Monza, but made up his own chances of the Haas Cockpit 2023 with another Friday assignment in Austin in the gangs: Giovinazzi made an early departure in the unit and damaged the vehicle.
When exactly the decision will be announced is open
So now the decision is up to Haas. Team principal Steiner said on the sidelines of the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo that the driver choice had been made and that Haas would present his driver for the second car ahead of the Formula 1 final in Abu Dhabi – with the aim of helping the future Haas driver can participate in the Pirelli tests in Abu Dhabi next week.

When exactly the announcement will be made, Steiner left it open. Reason: “Otherwise everyone will wait for the day. But it will come [in dieser] happen week.”
Hulkenberg: A complete Formula 1 season last 2019
For 35-year-old Hulkenberg, the Formula 1 comeback at Haas would be a huge success after his last full Grand Prix season in 2019, then for Renault. (More on this in the Formula 1 database!)
In 2020 Hulkenberg completed three assignments as reserve driver at Racing Point, with a technical failure preventing him from entering the race in one case. In 2022, the German also participated in the first two Formula 1 races of the year for Aston Martin because regular driver Sebastian Vettel had to sit out due to a positive corona test.
Hulkenberg very “relaxed” in Formula 1
At this point Hulkenberg seemed to have resigned himself to the fact that he no longer had any real Formula 1 prospects. He said: “I will remain reserve driver at Aston Martin and have my duties at ServusTV. Other than that I have no answers, to be honest. I don’t know myself. But that’s fine. I’m totally fine with that.”
It was “not an urgent matter” for him, Hulkenberg said. And: “I need to find something in motorsport that I really want to do. But I haven’t found it yet. It could happen in the coming months.”
“I’m totally relaxed about that. I’ve had many, many good years in motorsport. If there’s more to come, that’s great. If not, my life isn’t over yet.”
The plus of the Formula 1 experience
On the other hand, Hulkenberg was also convinced in the spring of 2022 that his qualities would put him in a good position with potential employers: “There are not many people with my experience who are still here or driving elsewhere. There are not many alternatives. .”
“There are many young and talented drivers in Formula 2, but none of them have any Formula 1 experience.”
