As of: 10/07/2022 22:43 hrs

On Friday evening (7 October 2022), the DFB women in Dresden won the new edition of the semi-finals of the European Championship against France (Germany won 2-1 with a brace from Alexandra Popp). The match winner was again captain Alexandra Popp, who scored both goals in the 2-1 (1-0) win over the French.

In front of 26,835 spectators at the Rudolf Harbig Stadium, Popp headed the lead (44′) shortly before half time and increased the lead a few minutes after the restart (48′). Former Bayern player Viviane Asseyi (85th) scored the first home game since the European Championship in England with a penalty kick.

“It was a lot of fun for the crowd, the fans took us. Of course I’m happy that I was able to help with my goals to win. France suits me”, said the double scorer on the sports show mic.

Without a lot of permanent staff

Without the regular guests Giulia Gwinn, Lena Magull (both FC Bayern Munich) and Sara Däbritz (Olympique Lyon), Lena Lattwein from Wolfsburg and Linda Dallmann from Munich were mainly challenged offensively in midfield. “Today was an open-minded game for both sides. If you look at the whole game and the number of chances, we deserved to win.” according to national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.

Alexandra Popp experienced the most emotional and at the same time bitter moments of her career at the European Championship. The attention for women’s football in Germany has never been greater since the DFB’s second place at the European Women’s Championship.

DFB team not directly in the game

Both teams started the test match at high speed. But Germany initially struggled on the offensive against the French, who defended in a concentrated manner. But every successful move by Germany was loudly applauded by the fans. France did come a few times dangerous for goalkeeper Merle Frohms, but only shot the ball into the opponent’s goal when Lindsey Thomas from Wolfsburg knocked her legs off and a penalty followed.

The next challenges await the German team in the two friendlies against the world champions in November in the US. Voss-Tecklenberg hopes to gain important insights for the preparations for the World Cup from 20 July to 20 August 2023 in Australia and New Zealand. At the draw on October 22, the German team will also find out who their opponents are in the preliminary round.
