In China, 31,444 new infections with the corona virus were registered within one day. This is the highest value in the People’s Republic since the start of the pandemic.
Authorities reported 31,444 new infections nationwide within 24 hours. This is the highest value since the pandemic began almost three years ago. Compared to other countries and the large population of 1.4 billion people, the number is relatively small.

However, the Chinese state and party leadership has been pursuing a strict zero-Covid policy since the outbreak in Wuhan in early 2020. That means tough measures are being taken wherever the virus occurs: contact tracing, forced isolation in central housing, closed offices and shops, exit restrictions in cities with more than a million inhabitants, travel bans.
Millions of Chinese are currently affected by such measures. These include people in the southern economic metropolis of Guangzhou and in the capital Beijing.
Economy suffers from zero Covid strategy
According to virologists, the fact that the numbers have risen so sharply throughout the country is mainly due to new, highly contagious omicron variants. The economy is suffering enormously from the recurring lockdowns. The growth target of 5.5 percent that the state and party leadership has set itself for this year is likely to be a long way off.
In addition, many people are tired of harsh measures and constant mass testing. There is no exit strategy for the zero Covid strategy. Millions of elderly people are not sufficiently vaccinated. There are fears that the health system will collapse if the virus spreads unchecked.
