Zero Covid: success for Xi – misery for millions of Chinese

For a long time, China’s zero-Covid strategy was considered a role model for the world – after all, only a few people died from Corona in China. But now the concept seems to have fallen out of time. But there should be no further criticism – after all, that would also be criticism of President Xi Jinping.

On Friday, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence at 577.5 (previous day: 462.4, last week: 466.0). On Saturday, it made another significant jump and was 635.7. However, experts assume that the numbers do not fully reflect the infection process. The numbers are probably much higher.

Meanwhile, there are also signs of an increase in serious corona cases. That is what the RKI writes in its current weekly report. At the same time, the institute referred to the difficult interpretation of certain Facts to the severity of the disease.

The Corona News of Saturday 8 October: RKI reports an incidence of 635.7

7.45 am: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) put the nationwide seven-day incidence at 635.7 Saturday morning. This is evident from figures showing the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m. The day before, the value of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 577.5 (previous week: 497.0; last month: 223.1). However, this information only gives a very incomplete picture of the number of infections. Experts have long assumed that there will be a large number of cases that will not be registered by the RKI – mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a bias in individual daily values.

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 122,265 new corona infections (last week: 73,856) and 129 deaths (last week: 116) to the RKI within one day. Again, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent due to test behaviour, late registrations or transmission problems. In general, the number of new infections and deaths recorded varies considerably from weekday to weekday, as many states do not report them to the RKI, especially on weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

The RKI has counted 33,948,632 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the start of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

Biontech expands to Australia

4.30 am: Following the success of its corona vaccine, Mainz-based pharmaceutical company Biontech is further expanding its international presence with the construction of a research center and manufacturing facility in Australia. One of the spearheads should be the search for cancer therapies. Biontech Friday agreed a strategic partnership with the Australian state of Victoria to collaborate on the research and development of potential mRNA-based vaccines and therapies, the company said. mRNA technology has already been used successfully in Biontech’s Corona vaccine.

The jointly operated research center is being built in Melbourne. It is primarily intended to support scientists in carrying out their research projects in clinical development. In addition, Biontech plans to expand its clinical research capabilities in Australia and include additional study centers to accelerate the development of cancer therapeutic options. According to the company, Biontech’s pipeline currently includes a total of 18 product candidates in 23 ongoing clinical trials.

RKI: There are signs of an increase in serious corona cases – unclear data

12:01 pm: In the course of the onset of the Corona fall wave, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) pointed out the difficult interpretation of certain data on the severity of the disease. Serious respiratory infections requiring hospital treatment show signs of an increase in the number of cases, the RKI’s weekly Covid-19 report shows on Thursday evening.

However, the authors limit that “this also includes cases that come to the hospital because of another illness or require intensive care treatment and where the Sars-CoV-2 diagnosis is not the focus of the disease or treatment”.
