For the top match against Bayern Munich, SC Freiburg must struggle to grab a draw at Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga.
On the 9th day of the Bundesliga match, Hertha BSC and SC Freiburg played a 2-2 (1-1) draw at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Dodi Lukebakio (34th minute) and Suat Serdar (61st) initially turned a deficit on Sunday (9 October 2022) via Daniel-Kofi Kyereh from Freiburg (23), before the guests equalized via Kevin Schade (78th).
While Hertha is still in 14th place with eight points after the fourth draw in a row, Breisgau, who has remained unbeaten in seven games, is initially in the lead with 18 points.
Hertha BSC with a lot of bite
After the recent series without defeat, Hertha BSC also started confidently against Freiburg. With high pressure and no frills fast forward play via fast wingers Lukebakio and Chidera Ejuke, the hosts at the Berlin Olympic Stadium had the better chances of moving forward in the early stages.
Freiburg, however, had the clearer structure and better chances, even without their Covid-suffered coach Christian Streich on the sidelines. Kyereh initially missed the lead from close range (22nd), but was only able to celebrate 60 seconds later. After strong preparatory work by Ritsu Doan, Kyereh only had to push a back pass from the Japanese over the line to make it 1-0 (23′). Freiburg’s 13th goal of the season was the tenth from a newcomer.
Lukebakio converts penalty kicks
But Berlin didn’t let the deficit deter them from their line. The hosts bravely attacked early on, relying on fast-paced games. Above all, Lukebakio has repeatedly presented the SC defense with problems. Hertha’s player escaped for the equalizer from the right. His shot attempt jumped into the penalty area on the arm of captain Christian Günter van Freiburg. Lukebakio converted the next penalty safely on the left to equalize (34th).
That gave Hertha BSC even more momentum. Coach Sandro Schwarz’s team had two good chances to take the lead before half time via Ejuke (38′) and Jonjoe Kenny (42′). It then fell in the second round. The Freiburg defense gave Serdar too much space in midfield. The Berliner moved through the center and scored with a well placed shot from 18 yards into the bottom left corner to make it 2-1 (61st).
Inspired by the lead, the hosts continued to pull the trigger. Hertha started tirelessly and shifted quickly. Freiburg could hardly catch his breath – and still could be happy with the equalizer. Hertha goalkeeper Oliver Christensen misjudged a long free kick and did not get a good hold of the ball. Freiburg switched quickly and scored the 2:2 (78th) via Damage.
Freiburg first to Nantes, then against Bayern
SC Freiburg must first play at FC Nantes on match day 4 of the group stage of the Europa League (Thursday, October 13, 2022, 6:45 PM). In the Bundesliga, the Breisgauer are then obliged to leave Bayern Munich on Sunday evening. Hertha BSC will be a guest at RB Leipzig the day before in the Saturday evening game.
