Many motorists have marked November 30 in their calendars. Until this date, many car insurance policies can be canceled and you can change providers. The test by the German Institute for Service Quality shows that you can often perform better with a change.

In the sum of insurance premiums, benefits and online service, the motor insurers achieved a good result. All in all, the direct insurers achieved a slightly better result with 76.1 points than the insurers with an intermediary network (72.4 points). Two direct insurers achieve the quality rating “very good”.

Great savings potential

The cost of auto insurance varies widely between industry and direct insurers and their different rates. In all twelve studied scenarios (three user profiles in combination with four car classes) it appears that choosing the cheapest provider instead of the most expensive can achieve a maximum saving of more than 27 percent – this applies both when comparing the cheaper base and the powerful Comfort rates. In individual cases, the savings potential is even 50 percent and more.

The rule of thumb “basic fares score points in terms of price, comfort fares are more powerful” often applies, but not always. The best base rates in the test have more comprehensive insurance features than individual comfort rates.

In return, there are also relatively cheap rates in the premium rate segment. Markus Hamer, Director of the German Institute for Service Quality, summarizes: “The Internet is also becoming increasingly important as a service channel – also for companies with an intermediary network. Car insurers are generally well positioned here in terms of customer focus. Who has one? When considering and comparing a switch of provider, you should not lose sight of the service aspect in addition to costs and services.”

The best industry car insurers

Both the basic and the comfort rate of the insurer convince in the test – the company takes first place in both product categories. The attractive insurance premiums of the comfort rate and the good insurance characteristics of the basic rate are also decisive. In addition, HDI offers a good online service with a very user-friendly website.

Secures second place HUK Coburg (Quality rating: “good”). The provider convinces in the product analysis, especially with the comfort rate, with extensive insurance equipment – only an industry insurer offers even greater coverage here. The basic rate scores mainly with low costs. In addition, HUK-Coburg offers the third best online service of all tested car insurers.

axa (Quality rating: “good”) took third place among the industry insurers and distinguishes itself with a good online service: for example, the website has useful information about the process of closing a contract and user-friendly navigation to the motor vehicle rate calculator. In the product analysis, the comfort rate convinces with a very large range of services.

The top 3 direct car insurers

test winner of the auto direct insurers Cosmos Direct (Quality rating: “very good”). The provider convinces with the best online service in the entire industry and very good conditions for the basic and comfort tariff. For example, the website scores with numerous contact details and extensive product information. The comfort rate impresses with attractive insurance premiums and very good equipment; the base rate also offers very good value for money.

takes second place HUK24 (quality rating: “very good”). The comfort rate achieves the best result: the most comprehensive insurance package in comparison is accompanied by attractive insurance premiums. The online service is the second best among direct insurers: the website is characterized by a high degree of information and user-friendliness.

In third place follows Friday (Quality rating: “good”). The insurer distinguishes itself with very good results in the product analysis. The basic rate is the best in comparison, although the scope of the services is also convincing, for example with the fundamental exemption from the new for old deduction. When it comes to online services, the user-friendliness of the website scores particularly well.
