What about Squadron 42?

Star Citizen’s single-player campaign was also a topic of conversation at CitizenCon, although there were no significant announcements or updates here. But there was actually something to see: the recordings of the new control modes were probably made in Squadron 42, as they were initially developed for it.

First impressions of Pyro

For nearly half an hour, the planets of the upcoming system Pyro were presented. We are already getting impressive images of the very diverse celestial bodies. Here’s how we see a planet completely covered in blue crystals, but also more vibrant landscapes:

We see smaller forests, oceans, gigantic craters and much more.

New Missions: Investigate

The investigations should allow not only a new type of quest in the future, but an entirely new play style in Star Citizen. Here you are not active as an explorer or fighter, but you investigate mysterious incidents and understand your secrets like a detective:

After thinking through several concepts, the developers agreed to make the new missions relatively open. So you search here independently (and without exact quest markers) for clues that then lead you to new places or come to a provisional conclusion.

You can, after discovering some clues, decide to accept the likely solution of the riddle at that time and complete the quest. However, if you investigate further and find all the clues, you will find out the truth and receive a bonus reward.

Underground facilities presented

Also under development are large planetary factories and warehouses, mostly underground. You should then probably be able to explore these as part of missions and provide players with plenty of gameplay options. So you can either sneak through the facility and fight to steal certain items. Or you solve puzzles to get ahead.

In the video above, the developers explain what the new industrial installations should look like and what they had in mind when designing them. However, many of these ideas are still in the concept phase and will take some time to be implemented.

New Speed Modes

Initially, the developers are working on a fundamental change to ship controls, especially for the Squadron 42 single player campaign. But this should probably also come to the persistent universe with Alpha 4.0.

Star Citizen: Master Modes are designed to completely transform ship combat

In the video, the developers explain that in their opinion, battles between spaceships have often gone too fast. Ships flew past each other at high speed, shot at each other, and were far apart before they could turn around and repeat the process. The fear now was that the fights would feel pretty dull.

To solve this problem, two different operating modes are now introduced. In standard control mode, you can use your weapons and shields, but your speed is limited to 200 to 300 meters per second. On the other hand, if you want to use your quantum disk to achieve significantly higher speeds, weapons and shields will be deactivated.

This opens up new gameplay possibilities, so for a possible battle you can now decide to try to escape and switch to Quantum mode. But then you are unprotected for a while. Certain ship types can then take advantage of this, for example by being able to block your quantum disk to prevent you from escaping.

Plans were also shown for a revamped Lorville, Star Citizen’s first city. This should be significantly larger and offer more space for reconnaissance flights. Several landing platforms will also be set up, from which you can explore interiors later. Also, the environments around the landing sites are made more detailed.

Finally multi-crew gameplay?

Then the developers talked about how resource management should fundamentally change Star Citizen. In the future, for example, you will have to take care of balancing energy, fuel and coolant in your ship. The life support systems must also consume resources that you must always have on board. You can also disable certain systems, such as artificial gravity, to save energy.

You also need to be able to control exactly how and where your ship’s resources and energy are distributed. You can see how this works from about nine minutes into the video:

Star Citizen: With the resource management you have full control over your ship

If your ship is damaged, you can replace or repair individual parts. If you replace them with better parts, you can even increase the performance of your ship. On multi-crew vessels, the captain can assign roles and grant access to certain ship controls. As a tactical officer you divide power over the various shields, you carry out repairs as an engineer and you control the weapons of the ship as a gunner.

It will probably take some time before all these features are ready. But this big announcement probably confirms editor Peter’s opinion:

Why the dream of a space MMO is far from over

In a four-minute video, Star Citizen shows what life should be like in the less civilized and lawless corners of the universe. If you consider yourself more of an outlaw, then you should look around for suitable opportunities here.

Finally, the developers present the revised community hub, which you can already try out for yourself. This should allow the Star Citizen community to more easily share and find fan content, as well as interact with other players. This example of a game created by a fan shows that the Star Citizen community is capable of impressive things.
