The German national airline flies the German football players to their World Cup training camp in Oman. This time, Lufthansa’s Airbus A330 has more than just the Fanhansa lettering.
Six days before the start of the World Cup for men, the German national team will fly to their training camp on Monday (November 14). She is preparing for the tournament in Muscat, Oman.
She will fly there on a scheduled Lufthansa flight, which will also be used by other passengers. Flight LH632 departs Frankfurt at 1:30 PM and will land at 11:30 PM local time.
Criticism of Qatar?
As in previous years, when Lufthansa served as the airline for the national team, the aircraft received a special sticker. Fanhansa is also the name of the game this time on the plane. But the Airbus A330 with the registration D-AIKQ also conveys a different message: diversity wins, it says big on the plane, so diversity wins.
It seems at least a small form of criticism of World Cup host country Qatar. Because diversity doesn’t win there in most cases. The scandal erupted last week when Qatar’s World Cup ambassador described homosexuality as mental damage. Same-sex love is a criminal offense in Qatar. Women are still being disadvantaged. The country has also been heavily criticized for its treatment of migrant workers, hundreds of whom died building the stadiums.
No rainbow flag
The airline makes it clear that it does not share this worldview. Lufthansa stands for open-mindedness, tolerance, diversity and connecting people. Everyone is welcome on board – “regardless of gender, age, ethnic origin, religion, nationality, sexual orientation or identity.” The special paintwork was designed together with illustrator Peter Phobia.
It shows different people of different genders, skin colors and different ages, arm in arm. German flags can be seen on some of the clothing. However, a rainbow flag is missing. That will also be the case with Manuel Neuer’s captaincy. If the goalkeeper at the European Championship wore a rainbow colored bandage, the current one is multicolored and carries the message One Love. But the rainbow is not visible.
